UNEXISTANT, c’est d’abord une collection d'identités générés par les opérations algorithmiques du système de sécurité reCAPTCHA, soit une série de lettres à recopier permettant de distinguer les humains des robots.

Depuis 2013, sur base de reCAPTCHA, Alec De Busschère collectionne ces noms, au départ, dépourvus de réelle existence (« unexistant » est un mot qui n’existe pas). Ils deviennent ensuite les titres de tableaux et sont développés en tant que personnages de fiction. Pour chaque portrait peint, l’artiste crée une biographie voire lui attribue un profil sur un réseau social.
