"Etat des Lieux 01" consists of the reproduction (on a scale 1/1) of an existing image reintroduced in its own shooting location.
This work was based on documents sent by the museum for information purposes which depicted several views of the exhibition rooms with the artworks exhibited at the time. The use of photocopy enlargements and screening methods enabled the artist to influence the document’ destination and status to turn it into a reproduction. The image obtained was then put back into its original context and inverted in front of the wall it depicted. This way, it acts as a "double" of this place, as a virtual mirror.
Next to this life-size photocopy, casts of a painting are displayed in the exhibition area. Other types of reproductions, these objects, which no longer resemble paintings, become hybrid objects devoid of all the traditional corpus of painting, yet containing all its characteristics and functions.
With this proposal, Alec De Busschère seeks to establish a simultaneous and subjective relationship, a permanent shift between the real and its representation, between the original and its double.
